EnergyWire reports that the Department of Energy has published the first new national energy efficiency standards since 2017.
The final draft of the new standards was published on Jan. 10 by the Federal Register, and contains policies that are expected to save consumers and businesses about $8.4 billion, according to the DOE. The new standards are also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 100 million metric tons over three decades.
The standards will directly affect many Americans with new regulations for four major products, three of which formerly lacked federal efficiency standards. EnergyWire reports that these products can be found in many homes and include portable air conditioners, and uninterruptible power supplies which protect electronics during blackouts.
