NextEra Energy, the world leader in wind and solar energy, announced today that its family of companies will commit $1.5 million in COVID-19 emergency assistance as the virus continues to plunge the global economy while posing a major threat to the United States healthcare system.

NextEra Energy reports that the funds will be provided by the NextEra Energy Foundation and Gulf Power Foundation and will be distributed to partner organizations to provide critical support to vulnerable community members.

“We are steadfastly committed to doing everything we can to assist the most vulnerable in our communities as we all work through this unsettling and difficult time together,” said NextEra Energy Chairman and CEO Jim Robo. “Simply put, it’s the right thing to do and I strongly encourage other businesses to join this effort.”

The NextEra Energy family of companies operates in 45 states and includes Florida Power & Light Company, FPL Home, Gulf Power Company and NextEra Energy Resources.

Florida Power & Light Company, the largest electric utility in Florida, previously announced it is suspending electric service disconnections in response to COVID-19 and has already donated $100,000 to the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Gulf Power Company, which serves more than 470,000 customers in northwest Florida, also announced it is suspending electric service disconnections in response to COVID-19.
