A recent study has found that a large majority of flaring, the process of burning off excess methane at oil drilling sites, lacks the state-required permits, reports Reuters.

According to the study, out of 227 flares observed, between 69% and 84% were likely unpermitted, with the largest contributors being gas-giants Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell. The study was reviewed by the Texas Railroad Commission before publication.
