As grids across the county target efficiency and reliability, the U.S. Energy Department is launching a new initiative to reduce the costs of producing long-term energy storage, reports the New York Times.
Energy storage allows electricity to be stored for later use, like when energy production is less than anticipated. The Energy Department wants to drive down the cost of long-duration storage 90 percent below the cost of today’s lithium-ion batteries by 2030.
