Researchers are studying whether or not toxic waste from abandoned coal mines could be harvested to produce rare minerals needed for high-tech industries, like battery production and solar panel development, reports The Daily Yonder.
The research is being funded by a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, and could be a new sign of hope for communities struggling in the wake of coal’s decline.
